Volunteering

Volunteering with YHA is a fantastic way to have fun, learn new skills, boost your CV and travel to different places. We have a variety of different opportunities to choose from and volunteering roles to suit everyone.

The tasks are varied and in return you will meet some great people, who both work and stay in our hostels, as well as enjoying your time off discovering the local area and attractions.

This hostel is part of our Volunteer Managers programme. You can find out about becoming a Volunteer Manager and supporting our small hostels on our Volunteering site.

History

Pwll Deri opened in 1957 as YHA expanded their network into South Wales. The hostel was originally two cottages set at right angles, a strange layout for the location. The building is also set at a right angle to the cliff top creating a triangular space for the hostels.

It was also the first British youth hostel to be established with the help of the National Parks Commission. There was a large refurbishment in 2007 to bring the hostel back to modern expectations. The main change was with an all-weather conservatory replacing the triangular viewing area, making this much more usable year-round.

Meet the team

Manager recommends: After a day's exertion on your activity break, relax and enjoy a bottle of wine and watch the sun set from the comfort of the hostel. On cold and windy days sit in this warm and cosy retreat with a cup of coffee, and watch the storms pounding the shoreline - a spectacular sight that you'll only see on a coastal break.
