YHA Tintagel opening in 1947 and operated for 25 years before undergoing a refurbishment in 1972 where it was brought up to date after damage from sea spray. Improvements included new dorm rooms, washrooms and moving the toilets inside from their precarious position on the cliff edge!
In its former life, the building that now houses the Youth Hostel served as the office and master’s house of Long Grass quarry on Dunderhole Point. This, the last working quarry on the Tintagel coast, closed in 1937. Today, all that remains is the slate waste scree from the dressing floors that litters the cliff face below the hostel. During World War II there was an Atlantic radar station situated just a short run up the cliff. You can still find the base of a mast and other remnants if you take a walk around the surrounding grounds. It is thought that the cottage served as wartime accommodation to the radar station personnel.
The hostel is run by volunteer managers from Easter to the end of October. The manager at YHA Boscastle has overall responsibility for this site.
