Inspiring things to do on a rainy day

Raindrops falling on a colourful umbrella

As wonderful as escaping to the outdoors in England and Wales can be, sometimes the Great British weather becomes unpredictable and the rain, rain doesn't want to go away and come back another day. But that doesn’t have to affect your fun. We've picked out a few things to do on a rainy day in the UK, so, raincoats at the ready…

Go underground

What's the best way to shelter from the rain? Go underground! The caves and caverns in the Peak District National Park are made up of unique rock formations and great to explore. We recommend visiting organised tours or specialised centres such as the world-famous Blue John Cavern in Castleton. Home to eight of the 14 known varieties of Blue John stone, this place is full of history and fascination, even on the rainiest of days.

Enter an underwater world

Step out of the rain and go underwater at Sea Life London Aquarium and uncover a whole new animal world. Roam through the Polar and Rainforest Adventure, Coral Kingdom and Ocean Invaders and learn about the many different creatures from our planet. If you want to get hands-on with some friendlier beings, you can get close to the sea life and give the pretty starfishes a stroke. Don’t forget to take a trip through the Ocean Tunnel before you go.

Visit a castle

What's better than cheering up a miserable day than exploring a castle and learning about the history of the incredible sight? One of the most impressive castles in Wales which overlooks the Conwy estuary is Conwy Castle. The medieval fortress still towers over the quaint Welsh town, 700 years later. Put on your waterproofs or grab an umbrella and take a wander along the town walls.

Whilst visiting, make sure to look out for the Snowdonia mountains in the distance. The sight truly is something special even when it's raining.

Explore a museum

Visiting a museum on a not-so-cheery day is a great way to keep the whole family entertained. The Natural History Museum in London is a top choice. Delve into the incredible features exhibits instead of features such as Hope – a 25m blue whale plunging through Hintze Hall, a rock as old as the solar system and one of the world’s most remarkable dinosaur exhibitions. Don’t miss the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. There’s something for everyone at the Natural History Museum.
