Skiddaw
Perhaps one of the most famous and grueling hikes in the Lake District, Skiddaw is a seriously imposing sight. Dominating the skyline in the Keswick area of the Northern Lakes, this picture-perfect mountain is a combination of steep scree flanks and deep shadowy gills.
Although Skiddaw is a challenging hike in many ways, it is an easy-to-follow route and it heavily waymarked. Some technical skill is required to navigate the sliding scree underfoot in some areas, but you will be rewarded on a clear day with breath-taking views of the surrounding lakes, fells, and dales.

Keswick
YHA Keswick is an ideal stay if you plan to hike Skiddaw or the ever-popular Catbells, which offers fantastic views of Derwentwater and the valleys below. There are plenty of cafes, pubs, shops, and restaurants to explore. Many offer seasonal local produce, and some even offer locally brewed beers, handcrafted chocolates, and a selection of outdoor clothing for all seasons.
If an active break is more up your street, there are a few nearby marinas that lend the opportunity to hire a paddle board, kayak, canoe or pedalo so you can enjoy the uninterrupted views from the serene Derwentwater.

Ullswater
This lake is the second largest in England and is surrounded by stunning scenery. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the water, such as taking a tour with Ullswater steamers, or joining a guided kayak tour of this beautiful lake. There are also lots of natural beauty spots such as Aira Force, which has a magnificent 70ft multiple waterfall. There are viewing bridges for safety, so you can get close to the thundering cascade.
There is also the opportunity to hike Helvellyn and striding edge. This hike is quite technical and involved some scrambling, and it’s important to be properly equipped when exploring the summit. The perfect base for adventures surrounding Ullswater is YHA Helvellyn. With dorms, private rooms, and the option to sleep under the stars in our camping pods, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Buttermere
Buttermere, which means ‘The lake by the dairy pastures’ is famous for its beautiful setting amongst the northern fells and dales. There is a footpath around the perimeter of the lake, making Buttermere one of the only lakes in the Lake District you can walk all the way around.
You can follow in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright to the summit of his beloved Haystacks, or take in the views above Buttermere Valley by hiking up to the impressive Moss Force high above the lake. YHA Buttermere is sat just off the shore of the lake and offers the perfect bolthole to put your feet up after a long day of exploring.

Honister Pass
Honister Pass is one of the most dramatic and charming mountain passes in the Lake District National Park. It connects the quaint villages of Borrowdale and Buttermere, offering superb views of strong fells and steep peaks. Honister Pass itself is a popular route for hikers, cyclists, and outdoor adventure enthusiasts looking to experience the beauty of this area.
At the top of the pass, visitors can find the Honister Slate Mine, which offers tours that explore the interesting history of slate mining in the area. For outdoor fanatics, Honister Pass provides access to a variety of walking and climbing routes, including the climb to the top of Fleetwith Pike, which rewards walkers with scenic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.
