Social walk from YHA Brecon Beacons

YHA Brecon Beacons exterior

Overview

Wednesday 18th September 2024

Distance: 5 miles

Duration: 4.5 hours

Led by:  Dr Brad Welch (Land Use and Nature Recovery Manager) and Francesca Bell (Community Development Officer,) Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park Authority

From the meandering valley bottom of the Afon Tarell to the wildness of Fan Frynych, we will explore some examples of the landscape character of Bannau Brycheiniog and nature recovery in the National Park. This is a moderately graded walk on paths which are rocky and steep in some places and can be boggy (walking boots advised), but we will not hurry and there will be stops along the way.

From the hostel we enter Craig Cerrig Gleisiad, a National Nature Reserve, then climb to up to Fan Frynach from where there are stunning views of the Central Beacons and beyond. The return route follows the ridge and is far less steep, finishing along the River Tarell valley to learn about an important nature recovery project.
