History

The 600-year-old restored Dominican friary has maintained many historical features and is set in a large walled garden giving you a truly peaceful break. When it comes to having an epic story to tell, you'll wish YHA Beverley Friary's walls could talk.

One of our best historic youth hostels, the Blackfriars first built in timber on our site in 1240 and a 15th century gateway still stands in our front garden. There's no wonder people have claimed to see ghosts here, including a smiling Dominican Friar! A patchwork of bricks from different eras and sensitive restoration work, you could find an old iron oven, vintage wooden beams or an exposed stone chimney in your bedroom.

We're super proud of our history and have a stunning Tudor wall painting in our Great Hall - a remarkably well-preserved pattern of leaves and flowers. There's even an exhibition within our building, filled with interesting artifacts like a carved stone head, information boards and a walk-on glass floor of friary food.

It's taken decades to get our precious building looking this good, with the derelict Beverley Friary causing controversy in the 1970s; even being described as "a bottomless pit for cash". We became a youth hostel in 1984 and are a protected Grade II* listed building. Come and experience our unique accommodation for yourself or read one of the books about our amazing past.

Meet the team

Manager recommends: Don’t miss Beverley Minster, stroll over the road and explore the most amazing Gothic church in Europe - entry is free but it's worth paying the extra charge for a guided roof tour to see the church construction, tread wheel and get up close to the stained glass. Whether you're using it as a base for cycling and walking holidays or activity breaks, shopping or birdwatching, Beverley makes a magical setting for your Yorkshire break.
