History

YHA Cheddar was bought by YHA in 1960 from a YHA employee who originally ran the hostel with their family. Over the years, the hostel has seen many improvements to enhance the guest experience, including the addition of a self-contained annexe in the garden and updates to the dormitory layout to offer more flexible and comfortable accommodation.

In 2024, YHA Cheddar was taken on by local outdoor activity providers, Mendip Activity Centre, as part of the YHA Partner scheme, ensuring that the hostel can continue to provide young people and visitors with the opportunity for real adventure, whether they're here for educational trips, family holidays or a base while exploring the local natural wonders.

YHA Cheddar is operated by Mendip Activity Centre. Established in 1987, we are a national activity, education and training provider setting the gold standard in adventure and training.

Our goal is to inspire everyone, everywhere, to make time for adventure. We deliver high-quality and important outdoor education with professionalism and passion through the pillars of adventure, learning and training.
