Polbrean House is a large Victorian villa built between 1864-67 for local landscape painter Thomas Hart. The house had a dedicated studio built that was extended into the main house by its next owner in 1921. The house became the Polbrean Hotel which, at the time, was the most southerly hotel in mainland Britain.
The hotel was subsequently bought by the National Trust in 1993 and was handed over to YHA following a large refurbishment. YHA opened the hostel officially in 2003.
Manager recommends: Right from the front door you can set out on this beautiful and dramatic stretch of South West Coast Path. Take in the spectacular white sands and turquoise sea of Kynance Cove before cutting across the peninsula to Cadgwith Cove. Here you can watch the small fishing fleet land their catch, enjoy a fresh Cadgwith Crab sandwich and then head back along the coast path to the hostel. This last stretch is particularly beautiful in Spring when all the wild flowers are out, including some that are unique to the area.
